And, if you ask me, the layout bears an eerie resemblance to that of Nature itself.

There is an obvious temptation to see how discerning their peer review is by submitting something suitably wacky, but I'll leave it to someone with more time on their hands.

Anyway, what strikes me as most interesting is that it's another example of a group shunned by orthodox science starting its own journals of an alternative reality. The cold fusion community has a number of publications that cater specifically to their view of the world. Climate sceptics have their own journals too. Now the creationists are joining them.

It's actually an age-old way of creating a false air of authority. Back in high school I came across another alternative reality of right-wing paranoids with elaborate conspiracy theories extensively documented in self-published books.

The fascinating thing is that, with their own publications, they can cross-reference to create long lists of references that appear authentic unless you really check them out. Believers in the cause are then only too ready to believe them, as climate skeptic and sociologist Benny Peiser learned when he fell for a fake journal article and circulated it in his newsletter last year."

The art of Middle Eastern conspiracy theories

Finally someone in the western media spoke out about all these silly conspiracy theories Moslims make. This Wednesday (9/5/07) I will be giving a speech in the first AGM of the Atheists of UNSW Society that I set up this semester.

I also want to give a face to my blog so that it would be seen as more credible and to show that I'm not afraid to show who I am to the world.

BTW, I have got more that 10 000 hits since I started blogging. I wished I had more time to get to more people but it's not possible right now. Those facists, racists whites need to go back to where they have come from (Europe maybe?) and give back the land they have occupied for so long to their rightful owners. That would put things in context. I would love to see those leftists defending their occupation of the Aboriginal land. The Aboriginese here have never accepted the occupation of their land. SO WHY DON"T WE TALK ABOUT THEM, HA? IS IT BECAUSE THEY DON'T DO SUICIDE BOMBING? WELL IF THIS IS SO, THEN I'M GOING TO INCOURAGE THEM. If the west responds to suicide bombing then they deserve to be bombed.

Don't get me wrong. Yet that essential knowledge, generally assumed to come from parental teaching or religious or legal instruction, could turn out to have a quite different origin.

Primatologists like Frans de Waal have long argued that the roots of human morality are evident in social animals like apes and monkeys. The animals’ feelings of empathy and expectations of reciprocity are essential behaviors for mammalian group living and can be regarded as a counterpart of human morality.

Marc D. Hauser, a Harvard biologist, has built on this idea to propose that people are born with a moral grammar wired into their neural circuits by evolution. In a new book, “Moral Minds” (HarperCollins 2006), he argues that the grammar generates instant moral judgments which, in part because of the quick decisions that must be made in life-or-death situations, are inaccessible to the conscious mind.
. . . .
The proposal, if true, would have far-reaching consequences. It implies that parents and teachers are not teaching children the rules of correct behavior from scratch but are, at best, giving shape to an innate behavior. And it suggests that religions are not the source of moral codes but, rather, social enforcers of instinctive moral behavior. Readmore

You theists got that? A gay man in Denver claims he’s had a threeyear sexual business relationship with Haggard. The pastor has told us just a few moments ago that he has prepared for his own church to investigate the claims.
Haggard is the founder and senior leader of the 14,000 member New Life church in Colorado Springs. He is also the president of the multi-million member National Association of Evangelicals. Haggard is married and has five children. Male escort Mike Jones of Denver started talking to 9News two months ago laiming that Haggard does not practice what he preaches. He tells 9News that pastor Ted Haggard has been paying him for sex for the last three years. Jones went public about their alleged relation this morning on talk radio.
JONES:
Some may look at me and what I’ve done as immoral but I think I had to do the moral thing in my mind and that is expose someone who is preaching one thing but doing the opposite behind everybody’s back.
ANCHOR:
This evening we spoke with pastor Haggard outside of his home in Colorado Springs.
HAGGARD:
I’ve never had a gay relationship with anybody and, uh, I’m steady with my wife, I’m faithful to my wife. So, I don’t know if this is election year politics or if this has to do with the marriage amendment or what it is. But I’m not even the guy who will investigate it or question it, I don’t know what the dynamics are. This independent group will come in and do that.

And you know what? It will be investigated by some oversear pasters. Thats right, Pasters. And we know how unbiased they are going to be, aren't we?

***Update***
From NYT:
In a one-page statement issued Saturday afternoon, the board said, “Our investigation and Pastor Haggard’s public statements have proven without a doubt that he has committed sexually immoral conduct.”

This should scare any right minded person.

Just watch this alarming video clip on Answers in Genesis and you would know that creationists are not just an annoying fly. Why? Because a woman possesses the weapon of seduction. It is she who takes off her clothes, shortens them, flirts, puts on make-up and powder and takes to the streets, God protect us, dallying. It's she who shortens, raises and lowers. If the meat was covered, the cats wouldn't roam around it.
Then it's a look, then a smile, then a conversation, a greeting, then a conversation, then a date, then a meeting, then a crime, then Long Bay jail. [laughs]. Then you get a judge, who has no mercy, and he gives you 65 years.
But when it comes to this disaster, who started it? In his literature, scholar al-Rafihi says: 'If I came across a rape crime - kidnap and violation of honour - I would discipline the man and order that the woman be arrested and jailed for life.'
'Uncovered meat'
Why would you do this, Rafihi? He says because if she had not left the meat uncovered, the cat wouldn't have snatched it. If you take a kilo of meat, and you don't put it in the fridge or in the pot or in the kitchen but you leave it on a plate in the backyard, and then you have a fight with the neighbour because his cats eat the meat, you're crazy. Isn't this true? If you take uncovered meat and put it on the street, on the pavement, in a garden, in a park or in the backyard, without a cover and the cats eat it, is it the fault of the cat or the uncovered meat? The uncovered meat is the problem.
If the meat was covered, the cats wouldn't roam around it. If the meat is inside the fridge, they won't get it. If the meat was in the fridge and it [the cat] smelled it, it can bang its head as much as it wants, but it's no use.
'Satan's weapons'
If the woman is in her boudoir, in her house and if she's wearing the veil and if she shows modesty, disasters don't happen. That's why he said she owns the weapon of seduction. Satan sees women as half his soldiers: "You're my messenger to achieve my needs."
Satan tells women: "You're my weapon to bring down any stubborn man. There are men that I fail with. But you're the best of my weapons."
The woman was behind Satan playing a role when she disobeyed God and went out all dolled up and unveiled and made of herself palatable food that rakes and perverts would race for. She was the reason behind this sin taking place."

My response to questions from a group of xian students

The following is a letter I got from some xian students and my response to their questions.

***
Dear Roya,
We are a group of four students taking a Philosophy course at Dallas Christian College. We have been asked for an assignment to get into contact with an atheist to gain a better understanding of your philosophy. We were lead to your blog from atheismonline.com and would appreciate it if you would help us out with our assignment. We are to find out two things about you: 1. How do you find meaning in life? 2. Have you developed a belief system? If you would like to give us more insight into atheism, feel free to do so.

Sincerely, Judy Garcia, Miranda Laidacker, Thomas Laidacker, and Zack Smith

***

Hi All,
The following is my response to your questions.
1. How do you find meaning in life?
What do you mean by meaning? Do you mean purpose?
Well, from a biological perspective it is all about reproduction and speading your genes. As I am able to think and have emotions which are superior to other species, I also want to look forward to something that fulfils my thought and emotional needs.
As everyone has a brain of their own, they have each different thought and emotional needs and therefore, need different things to look forward to. That THING for me is seeking knowledge and contributing to humanity. The more I learn about this world and the more I contribute to this world FOR ME is the meaning of my life.
For others, even the meaning of my life can be seen in a different light. For example, someone who believes in marriage being the meaning of life, MY life has no meaning.
There is NO ONJECTIVE SCALE OF MEASUREMENT FOR EVALUATING THE MEANING OF LIFE. It is subjective and ONLY ONE"S OWN PERSPECTIVE OF THEIR OWN LIFE'S MEANING THAT COUNTS.

2. Have you developed a belief system?
A belief system? That depends on your definition of belief.
I believe that the people who I see in the train exist and I live my life based on the belief that they do and approach them based on that belief.
I believe in treating people the way I want to be treated. etc.
Based on this approach every one has beliefS.
However, if you mean a belief in something I have on logical reason to believe in then no. I don't believe in FSM (her holiness), invisible unicorns, god, allah, etc.

The God Delusion

Today I ordered The God Delusion book for our community Library.

You can watch Richard Dawkins speaking about his latest book The God Delusion at the University of Kansas in Lawrence here.

Why have an immortal life after death, when you can have it here on Earth?

If you ask anyone what is the top causes of death, what you will hardly ever hear is aging. We are ALL going to die and the main cause of this would be from aging. But why isn't this an issue? It kills just like other causes and it is not garanteed to be free from pain.

The problem is that it is seen as the inevitable. But what if there is a solution for it? Would we seek it?

There IS a solution for aging. And it comes from spending on research on the roots of it. It may seem silly but it is not as out of this world as it seems. Many leading scientist believe that it is possible within this century and if more money is spend on it, it could even happen within the next few decades.

Having a longer life span not only is great but it may also discourage some from bombing themselves and appriciate and value their earthly life more.

Kurdish Dancing (Halparke)

kurdish madascar
http://youtube.com/v/eTiKXffF1dQ
Kurdi Dance Video
http://youtube.com/v/UQLNgWOhT2M
kurdish-folklore
http://youtube.com/v/f5N6BLwrYu0

Kurdish Halparke in Europe
http://youtube.com/v/jY-Oyvey19I
I thought this clip on Kurdish dance (Halparke/Halparin) would be educational. So now I'm going to formaly write a post condemning their acts.

I as a Kurd would categorise PKK with IRA and similar groups. They may be called freedom fighters but in reality they are terrorists. They see it OK to kill non-cambatents for the good of their own people. Killing the innocent is NEVER OK.

But I would also want to mension that most Kurds do not support them. The Kurds are fed up with war. Many blame PKK for the lose of their sons and daughters as the Turks do.

The following is an article about Kurdish leaders attempt to isolate the PKK:
Iraqi Kurds agree to isolate PKK in mountains

The number of PKK members are declining by day. PKK is mainly a Turkey based group and are not active in other regions of kurdistan and even in Turkey many former PKK supporters and members hide their past identity as its no longer seen in a positive way.

Our warriors and freedom fighters are the Peshmerga.

18th of Tir, two years before 9/11

Many atheist blogs have deligated atleast a post to September 11 victoms and I want to express my support of the victoms of anti-liberty-terrorists by also remembering another terrorist act victoms: The students of 18th of Tir massacre.
Remembering July 9, 1999

Redefining Arab Identity

When I was studying for my Higher School Certificate, we were taught a Persian story about the Arab invasion to Persia, in our Persian studies. What was interesting about it was that I was reading for the first time about the Arab invasion of Persia from a Persian perspective. It was not just a factual account of what happened but a personal account of what happened. It was about a Persian princess being raped by an Arab Muslim.

What we studied in Iran was the exact opposite of this. We were taught through the eyes of Muslim Arab invaders. Our country history studies somehow stopped becoming a Persian study when our studies reached the era of Islamic Imperialism. All of a sudden we had moved from studying what was happening in Persia to what was happening in Arabia. We were taught that enlightened Muslims send a letter to the JAHIL Persian King to embrace the light of truth. We were not taught that Persia was invaded but that Muslims were fighting Jahils. You could even feel as if you were a Muslim Arab fighting the stupid Persian King.

This is very different to our study of Mongolian invasion of Persia where the history of Changiz Khan is ignored with the exception of a subjective note on the barbaric culture of Mongolians. I remember being confused as our history study seemed to give the perception that all of a sudden, some barbaric people (from out of space?) felt like killing some Persians. (note we were not taught about the killing of a Mongolian ambassador by Persia, which had a lot to do with the start of the invasion).

So when I was given this story about a Persian girl being raped by an Arab, I felt like I found a solution for fighting Islam in Iran. We needed to show Islam as an external factor and not internal. People have a problem with accepting that their culture is bad but if you show it has an external factor, that is it is not OUR culture but OTHERS, we have a hope fighting it.

This is why I think many Iranians are not identifying themselves as Muslims even if they are Muslims. The culture and history of Persia has always been important for Iranians, even after centuries of arabization, Iranians have still kept many of their culture intact. They see their identity mainly reflected in the history of Iran prior to Arab invasion rather than after the invasion even after all these efforts by our theocratic government to change this. In fact their efforts as I believe has had a backlash effect.

I never thought however, that this can also apply to Arabs but I was wrong. Arabs are not just Muslims. They have some beautiful history and culture no inferior to any other. Arabs were the one that translated the ancient Greek philosophy works. They had rules and customs that were not undermined even by the thieves. But this is never considered. This is NOT a fault of foreigners. It is Arabs themselves who want to undermine the history of Arabs before Islam. It may seem absurd but it is understandable as they see themselves as Muslims and Islam has made it clear that Arabs we uncivilized people before Islam. So if we are to ever fight Islam we really have to consider the Arab identity as the key to achieving that.

We are not racists but anti-Islam, however as long as Muslims define their identity solely on religion we are going to be seen as just racists.

This is a very interesting article by Ali Sina that made me think about this.

Gay Hyundai Car Commercial

I just came across this very funny gay car commercial from France on You Tube. I DO KNOW what I stand for but not sure which political wing represents my ideas. In fact I have seen many others having the same problem (Christopher Hitchens also?) which I think should lead to a redefining of such terms.

I don't think we can any longer call individuals as either being left-leaning or right-leaning politically. There are so many ideas that no one individual would agree on all of them with some one else.

In the French revolution, you were a lefty if you believed in republicanism and right-wing if you were monarchist. In the Cold War, we were a left-wing if you believed in commuism and right-wing if you believed in free market.

The more ideas come along the harder it would be to call one either a left wing or a right wing politically. Because not all people who share an opinion are going to have the same opinion on another political issue.

I for example, would be called a left wing, when it comes to social liberties but when it comes to securiy, defence, or Islamofacism, I would be called a right wing. And this is my problem. The Liberal party (conservatives) are anti-abortion, anti-gay marriage, pro-religion and the Labor party and the Greens are terrorists-apologists, neutral-on-religion, anti-US and ani-Israel and don't see Islam as a threat. I don't know if there is a choice here for me, is there?

Sign the Wal-Mart Bible Letter

There is a Wal-Mart letter that you can sign, if you haven't done that yet, which is concerning the selling of Bible, which the letter argues is promoting discrimination, racism and murder which are all illegal to do and therefore needs to be taken of the shells.

It's very interesting. In fact, unpopular government spending on a faraway Arab community brings out a rather ugly Persian chauvinism. One story has Mrs. Nasrallah, the wife of Hizballah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, receiving a gift of Iranian caviar, and thinking it some sort of jam. There is no jam that looks like tiny eggs, I told the friend who repeated the story to me. Her look told me I was being obtuse. The fact is, the more President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his government pander to public sentiment in the Arab world, which is ecstatic over Hizballah's defiant stand against Israel, the more Iranians feel neglected."

Iranians are NOT happy with their governments role in the Hizbullah's war on Israel. They DON'T consider themselves muslims but IRANIANS.

I have been tagged!

I have been tagged by AJ to do a Book Meme.
So here it goes:

A book that changed my life? Unfortunately it was Qur’an that changed my life more that any other book. It was Quran that made me an atheist. It was Quran that made me read more about the world, rather than perusing my childhood dream of becoming a vet. Before reading the Quran, my life was all about animals, tigers, lions, etc. After reading it, it became about, humanity, history, politics, religion, philosophy, and especially about creating a better world than the one that I was currently living in.

A book I’ve read more than once: The Republic (Plato). I loved the way it was written. I felt like I was there with them, arguing.

A book I would take with me if I were stuck on a desert island: Hmmm... Possibly a how to do book on how to suvive on an island and how to get home.

A book that made me laugh: A book by an Iranian comedian writer Seyed Karim about his growning up in Iran. Don't remember the exact name though. :(

A book that made me cry: None.

A book that I wish had been written: Any (philosophy?) book that would put forwards arguments on why we need to tackle religion if our humanity is to survive. It needs to show that religion is not just a toothless kitten.

A book I wish had never been written: Quran. I don't think explaination is needed as to why.

I'm currently reading:
Leviathan (by T. Hobbles),
and Two Treatises on Government (by J. Locke).

A book I've been meaning to read: The End of Faith (by Sam Harris).

What turned me onto fiction? I'm not a fan of fiction books. whenever I try reading one, I leave it after reading just 10 pages or less. However, I do read alot of futurist articles on the possible directions that our world can take.

Ok, so now I tag in turn: I'll do that later. No! this is not a blog name.

A bit of humor on Islamic terrorism won't hurt.

After all these arguing on the M.E. conflict, I thought a bit of humor is necessary (as least for me) to stay sane. But what is puzzling here is that with all this talking of Israeli war crimes and Lebanese misery, Hezbollah claimed victory in this war, didn't they?
The major newspapers and internet sites are full of article noting that, "For Majority of Arabs, Hezbollah Won".

The Washington Post,

"CAIRO, Egypt -- Babies have been named "Hezbollah" and "Nasrallah." The first three were heavy defeats for Arab armies, and though Egypt's army saw dramatic successes in 1973, the battle had swung to Israel's favor by the time it ended."

"In the eyes of many Arabs, Hezbollah's performance shook the Israeli military's image of invulnerability."

"The Lebanese people may have lost a lot of economic and human resources .... but away from figures and calculations, they have achieved a lot of gains," said Youssef al-Rashed, a columnist for the Kuwaiti daily Al-Anba.

Lebanon's "heroic resistance fighters have proven to the world that Lebanese borders are not open to Israeli tanks without a price," he wrote Tuesday. "Lebanon was victorious in the battle of dignity and honor."

So that's what all this was about. A revenge for the wars in which they lost and to show that Israel is not indestructible (what for?, are they planning or promoting another war with Israel?). They are seeking honor the same way, they seek honor and dignity by killing their daughters if they are raped or happened to be in love with somebody.

It's not about how many lives they themselves loose but how many they themselves can kill. Their happiness lies in the misery of others (Israeli people) and not the prosperity of their own people. How sad is that. What would theists say about, the meaning of life, punishments for our sins, existance of souls, etc? What would theists say if we discover the genes responsible for aging and be able to change them so that death by aging would be a thing of a past? Would they challenge the role of god in death? Would there even be a theist?

Imagine if we insert some gene into a chimp and be able to increase their intellect so that they can read, write and calculate complex mathematical question (which many theist themselves may not be able to do). Would theist accept that we are not that special but lucky that some of our ancester's genes related to brain growth mutated? Would they still refute evolution? Would they say the chimp has a soul now? How would it change our human identity?

I usually think alot about how to fight religious dogma but maybe this fight is not as hopeless as it seems. I can actually say that I have returned to my previous view that war on Iraq was a good thing. There is a few reasons for this and I'll explain why.

Firstly, I don't believe that the war on Iraq has been responsible for the hatred of US among Muslims. Muslims have always hated US and especially hate the Jews. This hatred stems from the religion of Islam itself. I should know better as I had been a member of terrorist organisation (Basij) myself in Iran (aged 11). All we learned was hatred toward non-believers when we were studying Islam. This link to Islam itself became clear cut for me last week when in discussion with an old Arab friend of mine, he refered to the quran and said that even the stones and trees would start to talk and say to Arabs that there is a Jew behind me come and kill him. He was not even ashamed of what he was saying. This wasn't something I hadn't heard before but what was the triggering point for me was when I asked him about the stupidity of Hizbullah to think that they can hurt Israel. He laughed and said that the Muslims in a battle(I can't remember the name) had fought more than 100 000 strong troup with just 10 000 soldiers. He then refered to Iraq and said that the mighty US forces cannot defeat the Muslims. This is something that I hadn't heard in Australia at all. I remember learning about it in Iran and I remember the glorification of the fighters, and how somehow god made the heart of the enemies of the Muslims to be filled with fear. We also learned about the glorious Khalifa of the Shia's that died along with the rest of his 72 followers who were mainly families consisting of women and children and elderly because he refused to give into his enemies requests, that could have saved their lives as had been promised. What we see in Leb is the same thing. they don't care if all of their own people dies like their own hero, the second Khalifa of Shias it is seen as a sign of strength.

Basically any defeat in WAR ON TERROR is a WIN FOR ISLAMO-FACISTS.

I also liked the clip that Atheist Jew put on his blog ( I watched half of it :) a few days ago). In fact there was nothing new for me in it that I didn't know before. I myself witnessed the brainwashing of children by the Islamists. This was before Iraq, before the new Leb-Israeli conflict, before Afghanistan. What the clip did for me was to take what was in the back of my mind and memory for so long into my attention and make everything clear. Muslims didn't start hating US or the Jews after 9/11 they hated them since Islam has existed. The INFIDEL US is an enemy of Muslims not because of their foreign policy but for the simple fact that they are not muslims. We had muslim cleric comming to our AUSTRALIAN school (when I was in my hast year of high school) and talking about the australian girls and refering to them as whores and sluts. He also talked about how he was searched in the airport because he had a beard and saw that as discrimination. Basically they hate anything they percieve as as unIslamic culture.

Islam clearly justifies kiling non-muslims and even glorifies it. For this reason I really think xianity is less harmless than Islam (at least for now). So even if the xians think that a win in Iraq shows that god is in their side then be it. Islamic Facism has 1 billion supporters but xian fundies do not have the mass support that the Islamic madness has and are definitely do not see killing as an enjoyabe sport.

I also think that we can't avoid war with Isalm. This is going to become much bigger then it is now, but it has to happen if we are to get rid o religious stupidity. Firstly, the moslims werent going to stop after 9/11 and whether there was going to be war on Iraq or not there would have been fighting in somewhere esle. Secondly, I believe, a war between Islam and xianity is inevitable. Both are bizzziiiiih recruiting followers. Muslims recruit suicidebombers and xians the politicians. Both want to dominate the world so a crash (if the war of Iraq is not one) is inevitabe. Thirdly, I think this is the best way to get rid of religion ones and for all. The two world wars were needed in order for a rapid acceleration in international cooperations and multilateral treaties that dramatically reduced the number of wars in world. The dark ages was needed to show that religion should not be mixed with government and now similarly, a war between religions is needed to show that just having separation of religion from the state is not enough and religion needs to be eradicated.

Another reason for my support for war on Iraq is that, I as a Kurd am really scared of Arabs. I know if the US gets out of Iraq the Arabs are going to turn on us and take away any freedom that we enjoy now. The War on Iraq has helped the Economy of Kurdistan alot. Kurds, a nation that is one the the most secular muslim country in the Mid-east, pro-US and pro-Israel is especially important for the war on Islamo-Facism. Just look that the post by a Kurdish Blogger. Where can you see that much Pro-Israeli expressions anywhere in the mid-east? I challenge you to find me one example.

http://kardox.blogspot.com/2005/12/biji-isreal-long-live-isreal.html

I believe an independent Kurdistan can be in the interest of both US and Israel. For US we would be the only muslim nation to support them unconditionally unlike Turkey and for Israel we can be a cheap supplier of Oil. The Kurds and Israelis have a lot in common. Neither of the two countries has friendly neighbours. Both fear Islamists and have Arabs as their common enemy. And their land is in constant attack by the outsiders. I think Israel is going to be an important friend of Kurds. Kurds do need America and Israel for their survival whether they like it or not.

By the way, I won't be posting much as I think I need to focus on my studies.

Bin Laden: The new coming of the Messiah

Creating an Atheist Society

In the last few months, I have been discussing in a few blogs, the idea of creating an organised community for promotion of atheism and also for a way of getting likeminded poeple together to discuss their ideas and beliefs. Now I have found my way of contribution to such a cause.

In my university with hundreds of societies and clubs, there is no club or society dedicated to atheism. So I thought I could do something about it. From next semester, I will be creating the Atheist Society of UNSW. This would also help me to find like minded people, for friendship (Almost all my friends are theists).

I do know a couple of people who are already interested in helping me, however the challenge would be to invite some famous atheists to our (future) club, for seminars and talks.

I am already excited.

Religion and small penises

Whenever I think about abstinence until marriage, I cannot help but wonder, how does it feel for a girl not to know what she wants from her husband in the bed.

What if the penis that you are to live with for the rest of your life is not what one could call satisfying? On the other hand, you wouldn’t have known this if you have had no other experience.

As a girl I can tell you that size does matter and if you have never had known any but that of your husband’s, then a man who has a small penis does not have to worry about being judged.

Wow! That’s really a man’s paradise!

This leads me to think that hey, perhaps all this religions are just men’s way of looking out for each other. Some kind of Men’s Club. A way of protecting their manhood irrespective of penis size.

So next time you see a guy promoting abstinence untill marriage, just know he probably does not have much of a package in between his legs. And if you saw a virgin girl, just be happy that at least you know what you want and that you can never be fooled.

Electric Fish In Africa Could Be Example Of Evolution In Action

I love it when the science papers and news are all filled with evidence and examples of Evolution. This one is especially interesting.

Although these fish look alike and have the same DNA genetic makeup, they have very different electrical signals and will only mate with fish that produce the same signals. Cornell researchers believe that these different electrical signals are the fishes' first step in diverging into separate species.

When he (Arnegard) joined Hopkins' lab, the team was about to publish descriptions of two separate species. But when Arnegard decided to take a genetic look at these particular fish, he couldn't find any differences in their DNA sequences.

"These fish have different signals and different appearances, so we were surprised to find no detectable variation in the genetic markers we studied," Arnegard said.
Because all of the 20 or so species of mormyrid have distinct electric signals, Arnegard believes the different impulses of the fish he studies might be their first step in diverging into different species.
"This might be a snapshot of evolution," Arnegard said.
Understanding how animals become different species, a process known as speciation, is a major concern in understanding evolution. Arnegard's fish may allow researchers to test if a specific type of speciation is possible.
One common type of speciation is geographically dependent. Animals diverge into separate species because they become physically isolated from each other. Eventually, genes within each group mutate so that the groups can no longer be considered to be of the same species.
Another type of speciation, which many scientists have found harder to imagine, involves animals that live in the same geographic location but, for some reason, begin to mate selectively and form distinct groups and, ultimately, separate species. This so-called sympatric speciation is more controversial because there have been few accepted examples of it to date.
"Many scientists claim it's not feasible," Arnegard said. "But it could be a detection problem because speciation occurs over so many generations." These Gabon fishes' impulses, however, can change very quickly in comparison. So Arnegard suspects that the different shapes of the electric impulses from these mormyrids might be a first step in sympatric speciation.
Science daily

10 Things I Hate About Commandments

You cannot miss this.

A comedy 3,000 years in the making...

Lol! Here's an answer that makes this HOW much easier to understand.

As scientists piece together the genomes of more and more life forms—from fruit flies to humans—they're finding ample evidence that new genes have often been created through the duplication of existing genes. Of the more than 40,000 genes in the human genome, for example, about 15,000 appear to have been produced by gene duplication. Evolutionary theories assert that some of these duplicated genes may acquire new functions and take on new roles. But exactly how do these changes occur?

Ahmadinejad Animation

I found a very funny animation of Ahmajinejad on YouTube. Unfortunately it's in Persian, so accept my apologies if you're not familiar with the language.

There was also a video on which he talks about "The Art of Defence". It shows how crazy he really is. It has English subtitles so there's no problem there.

These are some of what he said:

“Art reaches perfection, when it portrays the best life and the best DEATH.”. . . .

“Is there art that is more beautiful, more divine, and more eternal, than the art of MARTYRDOM? A nation with martyrdom knows no captivity.”

“The message of the (Islamic) Revolution is global, and is not restricted to a specific place and time. It is a human message, and it will move forward.”

Not that I didn’t know him but the confidence that he shows makes it clear he is not just a talking idiot. He is prepared!

Now, how can anyone say Islam has nothing to do with this? His Charter of Freedom of Human kind recognised the right to liberty, security, freedom of movement and residence, right of property, freedom of religion, right to work and the prohibition of slavery.

Some hundred years later, an Arab called Mohammed delivered an ultimatum to the Sassanid Emperor of Persia - to convert to Islam or face death. Persia did not give in. The Arabs from the deserts of Arabia, invaded, killed, distroyed persia’s rich culture, and riped the benefit of it’s prosperity.

13-14 hundred years after that, the children of Persia, learn in their classrooms that their ancestors were barbarians with no culture, who came to enlightenment with the help of Muslims. Everything has a beginning.
2. Therefore the world also has a beginning.
3. The cause of that beginning is god.

Let’s say the first premise is true. The second premise would be a derivation of the first premise. Let’s also assume that god is the cause of the universe. Now, from the first premise, god also needs to have had a beginning. So who created god? And who created the one who created god? And who created the one who created the one who created god? This goes on forever and ever.

The second problem:

The world is so perfect that it needs to have been created by some perfect being.

If perfection is an indication of creation, then god as a perfect entity, needs also to have been created by a perfect being, who also needs to have being created by another perfect being who….

Gosh, this sounds so much like the Plato’s forms.

If god does not need a beginning, then why does the universe needs one? And if god as a perfect being didn’t need to be created then why the universe does?

There is so much double standard in religious believes. The bases of many religions are in themselves a contradiction to the religious believes that are derived from them.

Dolphins 'have their own names'

More evidence that we are not as unique as we think we are.

Dolphins communicate like humans by calling each other by "name", scientists in Fife have found.

The mammals are able to recognise themselves and other members of the same species as individuals with separate identities, using whistles.

St Andrews University researchers studying in Florida discovered bottlenose dolphins used names rather than sound to identify each other.

The three-year-study was funded by the Royal Society of London.

Dr Vincent Janik, of the Sea Mammal Unit at St Andrews University, said they conducted the research on wild dolphins.

He said: "We captured wild dolphins using nets when they came near the shore.

"Then in the shallow water we recorded their whistles before synthesising them on a computer so that we had a computer voice of a dolphin. Then we played it back to the dolphins and we found they responded. This showed us that the dolphins know each other's signature whistle instead of just the voice. I think it is a very exciting discovery because it means that these animals have evolved the same abilities as humans. Now we know they have labels for each other like we do."

The research was conducted in Sarasota Bay off Florida's west coast.

The findings are published in the US journal the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
BBC

What do you think?

Imagine there is someone in a hospital that needs blood transfusion to survive. He needs to get blood for nine months constantly without any stop. However he has a rear blood type and you are the only one who has the same blood type as his. As he would die without you, you are forced to give blood constantly to him. You would loose a lot of nutrition and your body would not look as young as it would if you did not have to give your blood. You would also have more chance of osteoporosis (later in old age) and of a more severe type. However, your act would give life to someone else. Should you be forced to do so?

I'm curious why no "pro-lifer" ever advocates such things except when it comes to abortion? Why aren't we forced to give blood or a kidney or to adopt street kids, if these are needed to save lifes? Why do they pro-lifers have a problem with bringing a new life to this world to save an existing life?

I also have found another version of the same problem, which you may like better.

I'm an egoist?

I found it on My Case Against God blog. However, when you look at religion (and I would like to emphasis on Abrahamic religions), you won’t see them talking about morality.

What has been perceived in holy books to be about morality, are a mere sets of rules that are dictated to be followed, if one does not want to be punished by the dictator who made those rules. However, morality is anything but following blindly.

Secondly, these rules themselves are not necessarily good either.

When centuries ago, people said, “All men are created equal”, they did not meant equality among all human beings. In fact equality only applied to white heterosexual men which were not slaves themselves. Not even a majority!

Similarly, when religions dictate, for example, “thou shall not kill”, what they really mean is that a believer of our own religion should not kill another of our believers, accept if they act against their religious teachings. Killing of nonbelievers is not bad at all.

The Abrahamic religions actually contain very horrific details of murder, torture and genocide at worldwide level, many of which are written like stories, for educational purposes. However, they are not teaching how wrong such acts are, but how strong god is, and how one should therefore be very careful not to make god angry or else be ready to pay for it. Is this morality?

Many theists may argue that these are just stories and their religion tells them to be good. But what is this good? Is it about equality? Freedom? Tolerance? Not harming ANYONE? The answer is NO. All these are values (not necessarily new values), came to be accepted as a result of The Enlightenment Age in opposition to religion. The so called good that religion teaches only comprises of believing, doing as one is told to be god’s dictated rules and spreading the word of ones’ dictator by any means. That’s it.

Morals, as my mini Oxford dictionary defines it, is, concerned with goodness or badness of human character or behavior, or with the difference between right and wrong; virtuous in conduct.

Now, how do we find an act to be moral or immoral?

The morality of an action can’t be defined based on the end result of the act. Otherwise, a dog, that saves a human could be said to be moral. However, a dog is neither good nor bad in character as they do not recognize the difference between good or bad acts. The same applies to retarded individuals.

A moral act could not have its bases on emotion either. If I take care of my kid because I love her but would do different if she was not my kid or didn’t love her, then my good act of caring for her is conditional. That is, I love you, and that is why I’m caring for you. This cannot be called a moral act, even though it is a good act (only) for what it achieves. Otherwise, one would act immoral if there were no emotional bases for acting good.

The bases of a moral act lie on its reason. That is one should reason as to whether an act is good or not, and through acting upon one’s own understanding of what is good, that one can be said to have done a moral act.

This is why a religious person (one who follows gods’ word) is not a moral being as they do not act based on their own reasoning of what is good or bad, but follow what they’re told in order to achieve something entirely different. Mainly to go to heaven and avoid hell, to make life simple for themselves and not having to find out for oneself what is good or bad and the emotional satisfaction of having someone taking care of them. Now, is this morality?

If we as atheists are to promote morality, we have to redeem what is inherently secular from the religious ideology (theology is a better word).

My definition of morality was based on Kant’s moral philosophy, if you want to read more on him. I couldn’t talk about him much, as the post is already long.

Atheist Test

There is an atheist test on okcupid, which I found on The Atheist Jew blog.

The Ardent Atheist
The results are in, and it appears that you have scored 80%...

You are an atheist, pure and simple. Be proud.

How you compared to other people your age and gender:
You scored higher than 99% on pentagrams.

Morality (Part I)

I have been asked many times by people of god/s, what are my morals? And what I usually would say is, to do as one wishes as long as one does not harm others. To me the emphasis on liberty is really important as this distinguishes my response from a religious response. Words such as doing good and not bad, has been used by religious people to mean praying and not having sex before marriage, so I dont usually use them.

However, the first time I was questioned on this, I first replied that I had no morals. Don’t be surprised. I didn’t know much English and the only times that I heard that word was from religious people, usually Christians and Muslims, when referring to abortion, gay marriage and the like. To me, these issues were not a matter of good or bad and only concerned liberty. Based on these, I concluded that morality really means believing that personal choices that do not affect others can be bad if god says so.

The shocked faces that were staring at me, asked me, as to whether I believed it is OK to do anything that one wishes? I tried to explain that I believed one can do as they wish as long as one does not harm others. The faces became friendly again.

Bellow is my response to Raen on atheists’ morality, on God is for Suckers.

Raen: “So, how does one define “good” and “bad” if all of her beliefs come from empirical data?”

This is the simplest answer I could come up with.
Good acts: doing good to others, eg. charity.
Bad acts: doing harm to others, eg. killing.
Neutral ones: neither good nor bad, eg. what you wear.

“It seems to me that everyone thinks that her own desires / wishes are good.”

Not so. And I don’t remember anyone here say that. But desires in themselves can not be bad. It is only in acting upon those desires that result in harm to others, that one can do wrong. Even thinking of murder and rape are not bad, as they do not harm others.(others may disagree with me however)Now, sex before marriage, gay sex or marriage and the like, do not harm others, so they cannot be seen as harmful and therefore not bad.

“I’m sure that Hitler thought that ordering the deaths of 6 million Jews was a good thing to do. On what basis can you say that is wrong?”

Death of 6 million or even one person is act of inflicting harm to others, therefore it’s wrong/bad/immoral. However, he used xianity to justify his actions. So much for religion, hey?

That’s my moral code.

The biggest problem that I see religion is creating, is that you need to be told what is good and bad from someone that does not even live among us. Morality did not exist before humans. It is a man-made instrument designed in order to allow for co-existence of human beings in communities.

If god and religion are taken aside, there are no moral wrong doings in acts that do not involve harming others. Putting it simply, all the personal choices, such as, wearing short skirts, or being gay, can not be seen in anyway as wrong, but only as personal and private life matter, that is no ones business. What religion does is to decide for you on what you can do or not, even on the most personal matters imaginable, when it does not involve anyone else.

Religion is and has always been against liberty.

I’ll talk about morality in more details next time, mainly on how a religious person is not a moral agent with reference to Kant and how religious people have hijacked the word morality.

The start

After browsing the blogworld for the last few months I have decided to start a blog of my own.

I will be posting soon.
